Cleft lip and palate surgery is a reconstructive procedure that corrects a congenital malformation of the upper lip, palate, or both . This condition occurs when facial tissues do not fuse properly during fetal development. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it affects 1 in 700 births worldwide (World Health Organization, 2020). Surgical intervention is essential to restore facial functionality and aesthetics , as well as improve the patient's ability to speak, eat, and breathe.

Surgery is performed in different stages, depending on the severity of the case. Cleft lip repair is usually performed between 3 and 6 months of age , while cleft palate correction is performed between 9 and 18 months .
